Today in a courtroom outside Kolkata, five men were convicted in two major sex trafficking cases.
The message is clear: Traffickers cannot exploit girls for sex and get away with it in this community.
These traffickers were some of the most brutal we’ve ever encountered in India. More than a dozen survivors rescued from the brothels testified in the trials. These young women bravely told how they were raped in closet-sized rooms littered with trash. They said they were beaten when they refused customers. One girl said she had to see up to 25 men on any given day.
The convictions tell these young women that what happened to them was wrong. And they tell a story of a new day in India – as the IJM Kolkata lawyer who represented the survivors in court explained it: “Today, we proved that my country’s justice system not only can work, it does work.”
