The victim at the heart of a commercial sex trafficking trial spent much of Wednesday morning tearfully recounting her yearlong courtship with a man accused of forcing her into prostitution.

Carl Michael Campbell, 37, could go to prison for the rest of his life if convicted of all the counts against him, which include commercial sex trafficking by force, sex trafficking of a child, interstate travel for sex trafficking and obstruction of sex trafficking enforcement.

The adult victim, identified as M.A., told jurors she had never engaged in prostitution as of August 2010. That was the month she moved to Sioux Falls from Sioux City, Iowa, with plans on attending Stewart’s hairstyling school and starting fresh after a string of abusive relationships and multiple brushes with the law involving drugs and drunken driving.
