She said Yarbrough took her to look at a two-level, six-bedroom house in Bartlett with a big backyard. The dream home would one day be theirs, she said he had promised: “He said he wanted to spend forever with me.”

Their relationship started with a romantic trip to the fair, but he soon coaxed her into working as a stripper, she testified. Prostitution was next.

It was a familiar pattern, according to the 11 women who testified this week about their love for Yarbrough and Yarbrough’s love for money. Once they were with him, they feared he’d kill them if they escaped, they testified. Some said they endured severe beatings that left them unconscious, with knocked out teeth and gaping wounds that required hospital treatment.

“I was fearful for my life,” the Cordova woman said. “I thought I could wake up with a knife to my throat or be dead and not wake up.”

After Yarbrough was arrested at a St. Louis Hilton Hotel in 2009, she was still frightened.

“He still has family on the outside,” she told jurors.

She said Yarbrough had vowed to get out of jail soon, but as weeks passed and he remained behind bars, she began to trust federal agents enough to tell them about her ordeal.
