A Timaru man with a history of sexual offending has been arrested and charged on child rape and trafficking charges, Filipino news outlets are reporting.

Filipino news websites, the PhilStar and Balita Pinoy, say David William Wakefield, 51, was arrested as he checked out of his hotel room in Davao, Philippines, on Thursday.

He is accused of molesting two teenaged girls, aged 12 and 13, last week.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it was following up the matter with local authorities through its Manila embassy.

According to the Sensible Sentencing Trust, Wakefield was previously convicted of sexual abuse of a girl, aged 7, in Darwin between late 1996 to early 1998, and sexual grooming of a girl, aged 11, in 2007
