Exhibit teaches dangers to Lee teens of becoming human trafficking victim

In a setting more haunted house than educational institution, teen students guided visitors through a labyrinth of black curtains in a Hodges University classroom Friday.

There were no ghosts, though. And the lights stayed on.

Instead, attendees at a two-day conference on modern-day slavery moved through the maze-turned-human trafficking hub, as the teens read aloud potential life-changing scenarios: the charming older guy, the job offer too good to pass up …

“You can’t wait until they’re old enough to hear it,” Nola Theiss, head of the Sanibel-based Human Trafficking Awareness Partnerships, said of the students.

Starting Thursday, about 60 professionals who work with human trafficking and domestic violence victims in Southwest Florida met at the university’s Lee campus to share experiences and troubleshoot recurring issues — how to handle cases more effectively, spot more victims.
